Walking on Water as an Epiphany and Confession of Jesus as the Son of God: An Exegetical Reading of Matt 14:22-33 in Light of Matt 8:23-27

This article argues that the narrative of “the walking on the sea” can be read both as a sea-rescue episode and as an epiphany. However, the sea-rescue motif serves to set the scene for the revelation of Jesus as the “Son of God”, thus rendering Matt 14:22-33 more of an epiphany. The author posits that Matt 14:22-33 is a response to Matt 8:27. This is because the interrogation of the disciples (Matt 8:23-27) about the person of Jesus–ποταπός ἐστιν οὗτος ὅτι καὶ οἱ ἄνεμοι καὶ ἡ θάλασσα αὐτῷ ὑπακούουσιν (Matt 8:27)–finds its response in Matt 14:33 where Jesus is acknowledged and worshipped by the disciples themselves as the Son of God (ἀληθῶς θεοῦ υἱὸς εἶ). And lastly, discipleship is a prominent theme in the pericope.

Le pape du ralliement

Pope Leo XIV wants his pontificate to serve the same values which Leo XIII also defended in his encyclical Rerum Novarum (1891). At the time, industrialization threatened the values of justice, freedom, and the common good. The pope realized that a joint action with the States was necessary, yet difficult to envisage, because of the anti-clerical spirit of the time. For their action to become effective, the pope asked Christians to be united. Today, the same values are threatened by artificial intelligence. A joint action is necessary to defend them; Leo XIV will certainly encourage Christians to take part in this struggle.

La mondialisation et la chosification des Africaines

Globalization does not necessarily sound like good news for African women. The present essay argues how two phenomena trample upon the dignity of African women, that is, Porta potty and babies’ factories. Beyond the indignation, the aim is to explain the source of these phenomena and to present the strategies of the church before the plague of human trafficking in Africa, particularly.
